Er promovierte in Psychosomatischer Medizin am Institut für Innere Medizin der Universität Giessen und absolvierte seine ärztliche Weiterbildung in der Kinderchirurgie, Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie, Neuropädiatrie, Neurologie, Psychiatrie und Psychosomatischen Medizin in Siegen, Hamburg, Giessen und Frankfurt/M. (D).
Facharzt für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie, Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie und Psychosomatische Medizin. Psychoanalytiker (Deutsche Psychoanalytische Vereinigung, DPV/IPV).
Habilitation an der Universität Zürich („Selbstbild und Objektbeziehungen bei Depressionen: Theoretische Zugangswege und empirische Befunde“). Titularprofessor für Psychiatrie an der Universität Zürich. Gastprofessor an der International Psychoanalytic University (IPU, Berlin).
